Six Months on, WPIX tumbles as WNYW grows at 10

On October 11th 2010, WPIX-TV, the New York City CW station (known on air as PIX11)altered their 10 pm newscast to make it look less like a traditional newscast and their graphics look like more or less like some app on an I-phone.

My October 15th 2010 article explaining my views against the change in newscast because many viewers-like myself- lost another traditional 10pm newscast since WWOR-TV moved the news to 11pm and My October 28th 2010 article featured responses from people who replied to the original article in anger over the changes.

Well, now it has been official, despite all the positive comments that WPIX has gotten over this “innovation”—the “innovation” actually caused a dip in viewership.

Despite this format being carried in other Tribune owned CW stations(albeit with some variations) In New York the format has failed to catch on with the main demographics that advertisers cater to—the 25 to 54 year old demo or the “money demo” as called by people in the TV business.

As explained in the comments sections of both my articles that were published on my own New York-centric blog “The City and My Life” and the “Andy’s Cue” column for Asnycnow Radio, people have absolved themselves form watching PIX News at Ten until the old newscast is returned.

The people—particularly the 25-54 year old group (which is also the key demo of readers for Asnycnow Radio and The City & My Life) have been leaving WPIX in droves to the ONLY other 10 pm newscast in town—WNYW Fox 5 (which originally started their 10pm newscast before anyone else did in the country) and WNYW has seen a slow but steady growth among the 25-54 year old group.

According to Nielsen, Ratings for WPIX among the highly coveted 25-54 age group, which WPIX was trailing WNYW by just 1.16(NYW) to 1.10 (PIX) in October 2010, saw the gap between viewership widen to 1.35 (NYW) to 0.92 (PIX) in December 2010 and then 1.96 (NYW) to 0.84 (PIX) in March 2011.

A commenter, Harold Silverburg originally praise WPIX GM Bill Carrey over the format change in the comments section of The City & My Life:

“If Jim[Watkins] and Kaity[Tong] (the former 10pm news team) were so beloved, where were all the viewers? Congrats to [WPIX GM]Bill Carey for having the guts to make a format change that provided a spark of energy that viewers will get to like in time. Watch the ratings climb.”

Well, Harold and WPIX management got it wrong.

RATINGNYWPIX This is not good news for WPIX management, The Tribune Co., currently having financial issues and this is not making it better for them—public relations or otherwise.

WPIX’s image has been tarnished in the city based on management quarrels. WPIX currently has lawsuits pending over charges of ageism (ending one’s employment over one’s age) and one of its reporters, Vince DeMentri was terminated with the station over a public spat and Chris Burrows, who was hired to be the face of the 4-6am edition of “PIX Morning News” (by Tribune’s VP of news Steve Charlier) was transferred to WPIX’s sister station KTLA Channel 5 in Los Angeles after ratings fail to grow under his stewardship.

A WPIX spokesperson pointed out to the New York Post that WNYW’s lead-in “American Idol” draws much higher ratings that reruns of CW programming airing on WPIX.

That is true, but “American Idol” was not on WNYW airwaves in December and WNYW still drew in higher numbers than WPIX compared to two months earlier when they were almost neck and neck.

WPIX also ran into some trouble as well when Tribune hired longtime friend to WPIX GM Bill Carey– former KYW CBS 3 anchor Larry Mendte as a commentator following his termination from KYW after allegedly hacking into former co-anchor Alycia Lane’s e-mail.

Alycia Lane has since resurfaced as a reported for NBC’s Los Angeles affiliate KNBC Channel 4.

Also, The New York Post reported that, When Lane issued a lawsuit to Mendte,WPIX shipped him over to Libya for an exclusive interview with Libyan leader Muammar Qaddafi. Mendte accompanied Former Pennsylvania Rep. Curt Weldon, who has a long history with Qaddafi to try an broker a truce.

Skeptics inside the station told The Post that they believed Mendte wanted to go to Libya so he could rebuild HIS reputation before he face charges on ruining Lane’s reputation.

This is a station that fires people left and right, and they’ll pay for a Libya Trip”- WPIX Insider tell the New York Post (03/12/11)

So now Six months after the changed at PIX, not only have they lost viewership at 10pm but also lost to “Good Day New York” due to the presenter shuffle.

Now, WPIX still has time to undo their mistake and return the old 10pm newscast. They don’t have to do it immediately, they should phase in the old newscast back on air before the change in viewership is permanent.

With American Idol now the main lead-in plus many strong FOX programming serving strong lead-in, WNYW is now dominating the 10pm news market and WNYW had it right since 1967—If it Ain’t Broke, Dont fix it!—something that WPIX is now learning the hard way.

3 weeks in, PIX News at Ten’s new format is still not welcomed

Since the changes to WPIX’s News at 10 went into effect on October 11th, Viewers are STILL infuriated that the changes wont be undone.

The new change in format includes the well-known anchoring team of Kaity Tong and Jim Watkins was broken up, Graphics looking like an iphone app and a public-access show and featured some reporters speeding through their stories.
The bottom line is it would no longer be a traditional newscast but a newscast on speed or ‘news on a fast lane’, the HLN network has had a success with this formula, but Pix’s version is basically like a summary of news lasting nothing more than 8 minutes leaving viewers wanting to know the full story and know the back-story or the issue presented in news reports without being left behind.

I was one of the viewers of Pix News at Ten, who feel frustrated with the new formatting changes and has made the switch to the only other newscast in town –WNYW’s ‘Fox 5 News at Ten’(until the News Corp/Cablevision dispute threw WNYW off the air for Cablevision subscribers.) I have since switched to watching the CBS 2 News at 5 and 6, and then catching the news via 1010 WINS or for International news via online on France 24 Tv and BBC World Service.

Since I first talked about this issue on October 15th, I have received many comments and emails about the changes at ‘Pix News at Ten’ from fellow angry viewers who were left out in the cold, Some were against the presenter of the weekday edition of the ‘Pix News at Ten’( which was renamed PIX11@ 10) Jodi Applegate and some are calling for the return of the old format. Some of their comments have said they will no longer watch WPIX at 10pm and has made the switch to Fox 5 News.

One Person, Mike wrote to me via replying to the post and said he can no longer watch news at 10pm because PIX’s changes and WNYW being off the air due to a dispute with WNYW’s parent News Corp :
“I can’t stand the new format. The show is chopped up nonsense, they seem to have demoted everyone who made the old 10 o’clock news great, even the video is awful. What is Kaity(Tong) doing interviewing someone in LIC( Long Island City), and why do I have to watch film of the back of her head? Didn’t anyone edit this? The AAMCO monkey-with-the-bat could do better. What moron came up with this? I can’t watch. And I can’t watch Fox 5 because I have Cablevision, so no more 10 o’clock news for me.”
Another Person, Tom P. wrote about the style of reporting and WPIX’s Commentators taking center stage: “I agree that the 10PM newcast(sic) at WPIX is a mess. I like Jodi Applegate, but not in this format, she is WAY too light. I like some of the reporters – Mocker, Howard, Mendte – but the format is a mess. Almos(sic) unwatchable.”
Bob Kurcharski replied to the story by saying “The new format is so awful that the station no longer merits viewing. There sould(sic) be a management change, not a change in personnel, save for Lionel.”

Of all the people who replied to the story published on the”Andy’s Cue” column on the Asnycnow Radio blog and on “The City & My Life” blog on WordPress, A.Cusamano, and Jeff were the most vocal. A Cusamano said: “At 10 pm we always turn on pix 11 news, always. Not any more. Pix news 11 can show all the positive news about the new format that it wants to,I and most people I know,do not like it, and I will not turn to pix news 11again.I truly regret this decison and really enyoyed pix11 in the past. WHAT IN HELL ARE YOU PEOPLE THINKING. “

And as for Jeff, he slammed the station management: “My wife and I have watched the PIX 11 news at 10pm nearly every night for more years than I can remember. After two nights watching the new format, we’ve switched to the Fox 5 news.
Whomever came up with the new format should be fired!!!
Bring back the old team PIX!!!!”

I want to say, to all the people , who commented on the articles, thank you very much for your opinions on the matter. I am truly appreciative of your comments.

However way WPIX wants to spin the publicity over the new ‘News at Ten” but myself and others out there are very displeased.

Changes to WPIX’s ‘PIX News at Ten’ Fail

On October 11th, 2010, New York’s CW station, WPIX (known on air as PIX11) recently altered their 10 p.m newscast to make it look less like a newscast and more like some app on an iphone.

WPIX GM Bill Carrey said the newscast was to be more fast-paced and created something called the ‘11 @10’’ which is 11 main stories of that newscast ran through like a countdown list with the reporters rushing through the news having one to three minutes rather than a 5-8 minute news report.

Yes, I get it, We’re in the age of people getting their news in a faster pace (CNN’s sister HLN Network is successful for creating and mastering that format) However , that doesn’t mean TV stations have to dumb down their newscast for young people.

And yes, if that means you have drop one the most respected news anchoring team in the city to get attention for the newscast, than you got that attention. Mind You, PIX11 is trying this format a second time, PIX News also had a 630pm Newscast that tried that format only to have that newscast moved up to 6pm on weekends.

The good thing about this change is that PIX is getting a lot of attention over the change and made the newscast feels different than its predecessor (because it is different than the old PIX News at 10)and its only competitor, the FOX 5 News at Ten which is run by rival FOX O&O station FOX 5 WNYW( who, along with sister WWOR My9 is having a dispute with Cablevision). The bad things about these changes are 1) the Weekday Jim Watkins/Kaity Tong team and the Weekend Peter Thorne / Jackie Hyland team was replaced by a single anchoring format of Jodi Applegate (formerly of News 12 Long Island, WNYW ,and MSNBC ) on weekdays and Jim Watkins relegated to Weekends ( which is a demotion).

2) They dumbed down the newscast to something, as I mentioned before, like an iphone app and rushed through the news to the point that you can not get the subject of the stories reported. 3) they are giving less time to those news reports and MORE time to the PIX EDITORIAL team which is made up of Lionel (don’t know who that is) Larry Mendte (formerly of CBS 3 in Philadelphia, who was fired for checking out his co-anchor’s email).

And finally, this is another FAILED attempt to attract viewers who have since started a Facebook page demanding the return of the Watkins/Tong team and have abandoned PIX News at 10 for Fox 5 News at 10. WPIX has finally pushed the viewers over the edge, and PIX thinks they will work, but they failed.
