NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez plans to continue to rehab his injured right shoulder, though season-ending surgery is still on the table, according to multiple reports.
Sanchez was “likely to have surgery” after Dr. James Andrews found a tear in the labrum, ESPN reported late Thursday night.
However, Sanchez disputed the account in a text message to the network: “If I needed surgery right now, I never would have left Andrews’ office. I would’ve stayed and got the surgery.”
“There’s nothing to report,” he added. “It’s reckless.”
Sanchez was hurt after a controversial decision by head coach Rex Ryan to insert the quarterback late in New York’s third preseason game against the Giants. The 26-year-old was crushed behind the Jets’ backups on the offensive line, the injury effectively ending his competition for the starting job with rookie Geno Smith.
