Terminal 4 at JFK airport turned into a refugee camp this weekend, as hundreds of passengers waited for volcanic ash over northern Europe to dissipate so they could fly home.
“I would pay anything just to get back home,” said Ireland native Breeda McGuinness. She and her 21-year-old daughter, Niamh, have been waiting at the airport since Friday. Some have been stuck since Wednesday.
The mom and daughter slept on cots the airport provided in the terminal. “We wash ourselves in the public bathroom,” Niamh said. “Yesterday my mom was crying all day. There’s only so much of this you can take.”
Things have gotten so bad the Red Cross has come in with blankets and water as if it were the scene of a natural disaster. There are showers available, but they cost $45. Some people are so desperate, talk has started of booking cruises to get back across the Atlantic.
