Feds to Review NYPD Efforts on Language Barriers

The Justice Department has been reviewing police departments around the country to see how they deal with people who don’t speak English.

Next up on the audit list is New York City. Justice Department officials say their routine audit of the NYPD will look at whether language barriers during police encounters lead to violations of civil rights laws.

Federal authorities have done similar policy reviews in the past in dozens of other police departments nationwide, but this is the first such inquiry in New York City

The NYPD says it has the largest staff of multilingual officers in the country.

  1. My department has been using Speechguard for 2 years to communicate with foreign speakers. It has worked very well for those of us that only speak English. I know NYPD had contacted us some time ago for our feedback about it but I guess they either changed their minds or there’s a lot of red tape about buying it.
