An AIDS awareness video has outraged Jewish communities and AIDS support charities after using a Hitler look-alike in a media campaign.
The German advert shows the Hitler actor having sex followed by the message “AIDS is a mass murderer- Protect yourself.”
Stephan Kramer, Secretary General of Germany’s Central Council of Jews said:
“Hitler sells. Shock therapies are the popular means in the media world to attract attention. They did indeed succeed. However, the collateral damage – to use a term we hear often – is also there. It’s an insult to the victims of the Nazi era, among them gays and lesbians who were sent to concentration camps in their thousands.”
The advert was created by a Hamburg-based agency “Das Comitee,” to be broadcast on this years’ World AIDS Day on December 1.
Dirk Silz of “Das Comitee” explained why they had used the Hitler double. He said:
“Basically, we wanted to give the virus itself a face, and this face cannot be a beautiful face. That’s why we hit on Adolf Hitler.”
A German AIDS awareness group has commissioned the video as interest in the condition has declined while the number of sufferers has increased. But Britain’s National AIDS Trust says it stigmatises people living with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS.
