Spotlight on Kabul’s post-poll strategy

The 27 nations and organisations involved in the conflict in Afghanistan have met in Paris to discuss a strategy for after the election.

The US special Afghan envoy, Richard Holbrooke, said Washington did not favour either of the main candidates for the Afghan presidency nor did it matter whether a second round of voting was needed. All that mattered for the US, he said, was that the election process was fair.

Among other declarations was assurance from French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner that there could be no withdrawal of foreign troops until the region is secure.
