A fresh row has broken out between Abkhazia and Georgia over the fate of a Turkish supply ship.
Abkhazia has reportedly threatened to destroy Georgian navy ships after a Turkish vessel was detained when it tried to make a delivery to the Abkhaz capital Sukhmi.
Abkhazia claims Georgian ships have entered the enclave’s territorial waters.
Georgia has banned all economic and commercial activity with Abkhazia and the other breakaway region of South Ossetia after last year’s five day war with Russia.
But Abkhazia’s Foreign Minister says he’s ready to retaliate. “We can also detain Georgian civilian ships in neutral waters, and we don’t need Russia’s help,” he insisted.
On Tuesday Georgia jailed a Turkish ship’s captain for 24 years for trying to deliver fuel to Abkhazia in breach of the blockade.
