The funeral service of Senator Teddy Kennedy has taken place in Boston. Among the 1,500 guests at the mass were dozens of senators, four living US Presidents, world leaders and friends and family.
Kennedy’s two sons, Edward Jnr and Patrick, gave moving remembrances before President Obama, whose rise to the White House was helped by the Massachusetts Senator, delivered the eulogy:
“We do not weep for him today because of the prestige attached to his name or his office. We weep because we loved this kind and tender hero who persevered through pain and tragedy – not for the sake of ambition or vanity; not for wealth or power; but only for the people and the country he loved.”
Senator Kennedy’s body will be flown to Washington for a procession that will take his coffin past Capitol Hill to Arlington National Cemetery, the final resting place for America’s most celebrated heroes. He will be laid to rest next to his slain brothers, Senator Bobby and President John F. Kennedy.
