There are two new millionaires Saturday, and one of them is in New York City. The $333 million jackpot is to be split between a winner in the Bronx, and one in California.
The jackpot for the Friday drawing had been estimated at $325 million. Due to soaring ticket sales, the prize was boosted to $333 million. The numbers were drawn Friday night in Atlanta. The winning numbers are 37,1,17,31,54. The Mega Ball was 31.
The lucky Bronx lottery player bought his winning ticket at a Fordham Road store with a knack for selling winners.
The Fordham Grocery and Convenience Store is getting a name for itself as a “lucky” spot to buy lottery tickets, as it has thus far sold one of two winning tickets in the fourth-biggest lottery payout ever in North America.
“It’s a very lucky store,” said manager Dushar Shah. He recalled how the store sold a $10,000 winning ticket in January and a $20,000 winner in June. As far as the identity of the winner goes, Shah said his guess is as good as anyone else’s. “We sell 2,000 tickets every day,” he said. “So it could be anyone.”
“I was just really hoping that one of my customers would win,” said clerk Michael Patel. Business at the store was brisk as he and Shah waited for their lucky winner to pay them a visit.
The two winners will split the $333 million jackpot. That comes to an estimated $166.5 million each. “That’s a third of a billion dollars,” stated Mega Millions spokeswoman Jennifer Givner. “It’s the fourth-largest lottery payout in North American history.”
After taxes, the cash payout is estimated at $210.4 million. If no winners emerge, the jackpot will go up to $430 million – the largest lottery payout ever.
Mega Millions tickets are sold in Georgia, Illinois, California, Texas, Washington, Virginia, Ohio, New York, New Jersey, Michigan, Maryland and Massachusetts.
The new Mega Millions jackpot is estimated at $12 million for Tuesday’s drawing.
