A 14-year-old boy is dead after he was shot in the back early Monday morning in Newark.
The victim, Keith Calhoun, was with a group of friends when at least two young suspects approached the group on foot.
After a short verbal exchange between the group of teens and the two suspects, the group began to flee and one of the suspects pulled out a firearm and shot once at the group.
Calhoun, who was also fleeing, was struck in the back by the bullet. He collapsed at the corner of South 7th Street and 12th Avenue.
One of the teen’s friends transported him to the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, where he died from his injuries.
Andrea Bryant, the victim’s mother, said the group of people her son was with were not necessarily friends. She believes her son became involved with a gang and his death is gang-related.
“This is what gang violence does,” Bryant told PIX News, “My son became a gangmember and gangmembers killed my son.”
The Newark Police Department’s Homicide Squad and Essex County Prosecutor’s Office are working together in the investigation, which is still in its early stages. A manhunt is underway, but investigators have not identified the suspects nor a motive to the teen’s killing.
Newark Police are urging anyone with information about this case to call Crime Stoppers at 877-NWK-TIPS (695-8477) or 877-NWK-GUNS (695-4867). Callers can choose to remain anonymous and tipsters leading police to the arrest or indictment of suspect can recieve an award of up to $2,000 or $1,000 per gun to the gun hotline.
