BELLPORT, N.Y. – Police responding to an emergency call of multiple shots fired in Bellport Village on Thursday, shot and killed a man who they say pointed what appeared to be an automatic weapon at them.
Suffolk County police say Thomas Keating, 56, was standing on the front steps of his home holding what they described as a submachine gun. Authorities ordered Keaton to drop what he was holding, but that’s when police say he ran into his home. Keaton then returned and pointed the fake gun at them.
Officers from the Fifth Precinct then fired a total of 10 shots at Keaton.
The gun turned out to be a replica of an Uzi submachine gun, Suffolk police said.
Suffolk County Police Commissioner Richard Dormer said there is no reason to believe the shooting wasn’t justified. The incident is under investigation.
